I'm Katie Nickerson, brain retraining coach - and I built the first version of this as a note in my phone's notes app.

For nearly a decade, I did everything right. I followed the protocols, took the binders, moved across the country, and got rid of almost everything I owned. I had CIRS, ME/CFS, chemical sensitivities, chronic pain, MCAS. I started brain retraining and began to see small shifts - but flares kept derailing me. Every time my symptoms spiked, I felt completely powerless. I knew the tools. I just couldn't access them.

Three days before a trip to Disney World - the trip I'd been retraining toward for months - I had a massive reaction. I was in bed for three days, convinced none of it had worked.

The day before the trip, I had a call with my coach. By the end of that one conversation, my symptoms had completely lifted. Not magic. She walked me back to the truth of what was happening, brought my fear down, and reminded me I wasn't in danger.

After the call, I made a note on my phone that contained reminders, encouragement, and specific phrases she'd said, so that I could review it during the hard moments.
